Honoring a lifetime of service

It takes a lifetime to build a legacy. Some are larger than others and some reach farther. Last week, George Mutton, now 85, was given some measure of his decades long, unwavering service to God and church. George Mutton of the Warsaw community thought he heard God’s calling while in his late teens, and he mentioned that fact to a Baptist preacher while attending a revival at Bayou Meto. Mutton remembers saying, “I told him that someday I’m going to be a preacher.” [Full Text]


Three honored by economics group

Three economic stalwarts who helped put Arkansas on the map were honored posthumously earlier this month. Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller, Kenneth Pat Wilson of Jacksonville and Mike Wilson of Osceola were honored with the “Leadership in Free Enterprise” award by Economics Arkansas. Store founder at grand opening

Early in the morning on April 6, hundreds of people were lined up outside the new Edwards Cash Saver in Jacksonville, eager to get their $1 silver coins and check out the bargains inside. Oral Edwards, 86, the company founder, greeted many of them at the door after a grand opening ceremony. This is a Cost Plus supermarket similar to the Edwards Cash Saver stores in Little Rock and North Little Rock, where all goods are available at the store’s cost plus 10 percent at checkout. Aide recognized for 25 years

Gayla Eaker has been recognized by East Arkansas Area Agency on Aging for 25 years of service to the elderly. Eaker represents the Agency as an independent living aide in Greene County. In this role, she provides support to elderly and disabled adult patients as well as veterans of war by performing tasks that illness or disability have robbed them of performing independently. White River Area Agency on Aging is hosting the 2nd annual Senior Center Quiz Bowl Tournament April 29 at First Church of the Nazarene located on Harrison Street in Batesville. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. and the tournament starts at 10 a.m.
